Human Rights and Women’s Rights Defender, and Her Family
Date: October 29, 2026
Category: Press Release / Human Rights Advocacy
The Institutions of Civil Society and Human Rights in Afghanistan (ICSHRA) express their grave concern regarding the arbitrary arrest of Nikbakht Arifi, a prominent human rights and women’s rights defender, along with three members of her family by the Pakistani police.
ICSHRA urgently appeals to the Government of Pakistan, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), international diplomatic missions, and global human rights organization to step in immediately to halt their forced deportation to Afghanistan.
Background & Serious Risks
According to verified reports, Nikbakht Arifi and her family members were detained in Pakistan while awaiting international protection and protection processes.
As a dedicated advocate who has vocalized opposition to gender-based oppression and human rights violations in Afghanistan, returning Ms. Arifi under current conditions poses an immediate and catastrophic threat to her safety, physical integrity, and life. Forced return to Afghanistan directly violates the international legal principle of non-refoulement, which prohibits returning individuals to countries where they face severe risk of persecution, torture, or retaliation.
Key Demands of ICSHRA:
- Immediate Release: We call upon the Pakistani authorities to immediately and unconditionally release Nikbakht Arifi and her family members from detention.
- Halt Deportation: Immediately cease all legal and procedural steps regarding their forced removal to Afghanistan.
- UNHCR Intervention: We request UNHCR to urgently provide legal assistance, extend protection coverage, and expedite their refugee status processing.
- International Protection: We urge international human rights bodies and partner nations to facilitate swift relocation options for vulnerable Afghan rights defenders facing deportation threats.
