Institutions of Civil Society and Human Rights in Afghanistan

Report on the Protest Against Taliban Religious Schools

Location: Tehran, Iran
Date: November 29, 2023

In the Name of Humanity,

With profound regret and deep concern, we, the Afghan Civil Society and Human Rights Organizations, strongly oppose the establishment of religious schools (madrasas) by the Taliban. While they claim to promote religion, these institutions are, in reality, breeding grounds for terrorism, fear, and violence.

Reports and images widely circulated in the media reveal alarming practices within these schools, including violent training methods and acts of abuse and torture targeting children and women. The recent announcement by the Taliban’s Minister of Education about replacing regular schools with religious madrasas has further heightened our concerns.

We firmly believe that exploiting the name of religion to propagate extremism, terrorism, and inappropriate cultural practices poses a severe threat to the security and stability of Afghan society. Preventing the spread of such institutions and halting their operations is critical to safeguarding the future of Afghanistan.

As representatives of the people and defenders of civil and human rights, we demand the establishment of a fair, non-violent, and extremist-free education system for Afghan children, particularly for women and girls.

Our Message:

  • No to Extremism
  • No to Taliban Schools

#OurFightContinues
