ICSHRA Statement Condemning the Detention and Alleged Torture of Afghan Journalists by the Taliban and Calling for Their Immediate Release

Date: April 13, 2026
Official Statement
Institutions of Civil Society and Human Rights in Afghanistan (ICSHRA)
The Institutions of Civil Society and Human Rights in Afghanistan (ICSHRA) expresses its deep concern regarding the situation of Afghan journalists Mr. Hamid Farhadi, Mr. Ahmad Shakib Nazari, and Mr. Bashir Hatef, who are currently detained by the Taliban in Afghanistan.

These journalists, who have consistently served as the voice of the people of Afghanistan, are reportedly in a critical condition. According to reports and findings from media organizations and journalist support entities, their physical, psychological, and mental health conditions are deteriorating, with credible reports indicating that they have been subjected to torture and ill-treatment.
The continued detention of these journalists constitutes a clear and serious violation of human rights and fundamental freedoms, particularly the rights to freedom of expression and access to information. Journalism is not a crime; rather, it is a fundamental pillar of free and democratic societies.

The arrest and deprivation of these journalists of their fundamental rights are in direct contradiction with international law, human values, and recognized Islamic principles.
ICSHRA calls on all international human rights organizations and relevant institutions, particularly those supporting press freedom, to take immediate, practical, and effective action to secure the release of these journalists.

Our key demands:
*mmediate and unconditional release of the detained journalists
*Ensuring their prompt access to legal counsel and fair legal proceedings
*Urgent measures for their protection, support, and, if necessary, relocation to safe countries
*International monitoring of detention facilities and prevention of torture, ill-treatment, and human rights violations

In conclusion, ICSHRA emphasizes that the continuation of such actions will have serious consequences for the human rights situation in Afghanistan and requires urgent attention and action from the international community.

Respectfully,
Institutions of Civil Society and Human Rights in Afghanistan (ICSHRA)
